# How Valve anti-cheat works in CS2: VAC, VAC Live and bans

A cancelled match, a red Steam profile notice and a session verification error are different events. Here is what Valve anti-cheat does, what a ban can tell you, and why a tracker total cannot measure how many people are cheating in CS2 right now.

## VAC, VAC Live and VacNet are different layers

| Name | Purpose |
| --- | --- |
| VAC | Automated detection of identifiable cheats and restrictions on secure servers. |
| VAC Live | In-match enforcement: a match can be terminated after a detection. |
| VacNet | Valve’s system associated with processing matches and identifying suspicious play. |
| Trust Factor | Matchmaking using multiple trust signals; it is not a type of ban. |
| Game Ban | A game-issued restriction using Steam infrastructure, separate from VAC. |

Valve’s [VAC FAQ](https://help.steampowered.com/en/faqs/view/571A-97DA-70E9-FF74) describes signature-based detection. [Steamworks documentation](https://partner.steamgames.com/doc/features/anticheat) treats game bans separately. A public profile notice does not reveal the complete detection process, a particular executable or the decisive moment in a match. Valve does not publish its full internal rules or thresholds.

## Ban counter and daily chart

### Observed Steam bans

Choose 7, 30 or 90 days. Dates refer to the latest available source period; the tracked population is shown separately from ban counts.

Steam sample from bans.live, not official Valve totals or a CS2-only count. VAC and game bans are separate; community and trade bans are excluded from this chart. The last day may be incomplete. Missing days are not replaced with zeroes; tracker dates can differ from the time of the offence. We check the source every 15 minutes.

[Source and API](https://bans.live/)

Zero VAC entries means zero in this sample for the selected dates. It does not establish that anti-cheat is inactive: game bans are a separate category and the tracker does not cover every account. Growth can also reflect wider tracking. We therefore do not label this a CS2 cheating percentage or animate invented bans between updates.

## What happens during a check

1. **A secure game session** — VAC operates with secure servers. Connecting to one makes the account subject to the anti-cheat rules for that game.

2. **Detection signals** — Valve describes checks involving cheat software and modified game files that provide an advantage. A player report and an automated detection are different signals.

3. **Enforcement and notification** — Read the exact notice in the game and Steam. A terminated match, temporary restriction and permanent account ban have different consequences.

[Steam Support](https://help.steampowered.com/faqs/view/647C-5CC1-7EA9-3C29) does not disclose the software behind an individual VAC detection, because this would help cheat developers. Treat a website promising an exact cause from a SteamID with caution. The public notice is an outcome, not the anti-cheat’s internal event log.

In [Valve’s GDC 2018 presentation](https://www.gdcvault.com/play/1024994/Robocalypse-Now-Using-Deep-Learning), John McDonald described another approach: deep learning that identifies suspicious behaviour from server-side gameplay data. It examines actions in matches rather than only identifying software signatures on a computer. This provides historical background to VacNet, not a complete specification of current CS2. The 2018 architecture and effectiveness figures should not be presented as current measurements.

## What Valve has confirmed in updates

- 6 June 2023: Valve described live bans and ending the match at the end of a round, the basis of what players call VAC Live. [2023 update](https://store.steampowered.com/news/posts/?appids=730&enddate=1686194721&feed=steam_community_announcements).
- 19 August 2024: limited testing of VacNet 3.0 began. The same update separately described kicks for certain input automation. A kick must not be reported as a permanent VAC ban. [2024 update](https://store.steampowered.com/news/posts/?appids=730&enddate=1724194853&feed=steam_community_announcements).
- 29 July 2026: Valve reported fixing a bug that let malicious players avoid VACnet processing. [2026 update](https://www.counter-strike.net/newsentry/692016318956699785?l=english).

A historical feature announcement does not establish identical enforcement in every current mode. These notes do not provide a detection rate, complete match coverage or a ban-wave schedule. This article was checked on 3 October 2026; the counter has its own source date.

## Identify the restriction you actually received

| Notice | What to check |
| --- | --- |
| VAC ban on Steam | A permanent restriction. Valve automatically removes bans it determines were issued incorrectly. |
| Game Ban on Steam | Check the game notification and developer guidance for its scope. |
| Temporary cooldown | Read the stated reason and duration. A timer alone does not establish a permanent VAC ban. |
| Community server ban | Contact the server operator. A server administrator cannot issue a VAC ban. |
| VAC verification error | Check the client, game files and conflicting software. A connection error is not itself a VAC ban notice. |

The policies are documented separately: [VAC](https://help.steampowered.com/en/faqs/view/571A-97DA-70E9-FF74) and [Game Bans](https://partner.steamgames.com/doc/features/anticheat). A clean public profile does not prove fair play, and a restriction from another game does not by itself prove cheating in CS2.

## Reports, Trust Factor and common claims

Valve says reports alone do not cause a VAC ban. Use the built-in report feature when you observe suspicious behaviour, with specific evidence rather than a campaign of mass reports. [VAC policy](https://help.steampowered.com/en/faqs/view/571A-97DA-70E9-FF74).

Valve’s original [Trust Factor explanation](https://blog.counter-strike.net/the-trust-factor/) describes matchmaking based on behaviour and account history, without a public personal numeric score. A third-party “87/100 Trust Factor” is its own assessment unless it can substantiate another source. The older CS:GO article is not a complete specification of current CS2 signals.

- A high headshot rate or a fortunate wallbang is not enough to diagnose cheating. Review the demo and round context.
- Prime, expensive skins and an old account do not guarantee that every opponent plays fairly.
- A website inventory viewer or simulator does not modify CS2 files. Software that injects into or modifies the game is a different proposition; the label “skin changer” is not a safety guarantee.

## If VAC cannot verify the session

1. **Read the entire notice** — Distinguish a ban notification from a session error. Save the exact wording, time and a screenshot for support.

2. **Restart and verify files** — Close the game and Steam, then restart the computer. In CS2 Properties, use Installed Files to verify integrity.

3. **Remove software conflicts** — Close software that interferes with the game and remove unofficial modifications. If the error continues, follow Steam’s instructions for that error.

Steam’s [VAC disconnection guide](https://help.steampowered.com/en/faqs/view/22C0-03D0-AE4B-04E8) covers software conflicts and client repairs. Verifying files can repair a session problem; it does not remove an account ban. Do not install unknown DLLs or disable system protection because a random “VAC fix” recommends it.

## Skins, restrictions and removing a ban

The consequences can extend beyond matchmaking: [Steam documents restrictions on the CS2 store, drops and item trading](https://help.steampowered.com/en/faqs/view/52E6-2DF8-205B-6561). An inventory valuation is not proof that its items can be sold. Check the actual restriction shown by Steam when a trade is unavailable.

VAC bans are permanent and Steam Support does not manually remove them. Valve automatically reverses a ban when it confirms an error. [Official support guidance](https://help.steampowered.com/faqs/view/647C-5CC1-7EA9-3C29). Do not give someone your account or items in exchange for a promised paid unban or an “inventory check”.

## What the statistics can and cannot show

The widget uses aggregates from the [public bans.live API](https://bans.live/api), a third-party Steam profile database. [Steam GetPlayerBans](https://partner.steamgames.com/doc/webapi/ISteamUser#GetPlayerBans) provides information about requested accounts, not a ready-made worldwide CS2 ban total. We do not add VAC, game, trade and community bans into a single “cheaters caught” number.

Only received daily rows appear in the chart. Missing dates or malformed responses are treated as data problems. On a failure, we show a dated cached snapshot with a warning, or an unavailable message. The retrieval time and the source period ending are separate: a fresh request does not guarantee fresh observations.

## Questions and answers

### Does VAC Live always mean a permanent VAC ban?

No. A match cancellation alone does not establish every account’s final status. Read the actual CS2 and Steam notifications.

### Can reports alone cause a VAC ban?

Valve says reports alone are not sufficient for a VAC ban.

### Does this count every CS2 ban?

No. These are bans.live observations from its Steam sample. Categories and coverage are explained beside the chart.

### Why can VAC stay at zero while game bans rise?

They are different public categories. A zero in the sample neither means all enforcement stopped nor measures anti-cheat effectiveness.

### Will reinstalling remove a ban?

No. Reinstalling or verifying files may fix a session error, but cannot remove an account restriction.

### Can I see my exact Trust Factor?

Valve does not publish a personal numeric score. Third-party ratings should not be presented as an official value.
