Pudge's most famous hook. A copy with an extra Ethereal socket holding Trail of Burning Doom («BUG龙钩» in China) is one of the rarest bugged items: it was listed with a $37,000 buyout in 2021, and a trader valued it at about 200,000 yuan.

Copies with properties Valve never intended: wrong gem sockets, unusual effects on couriers that should not have them, broken styles and rewards from exploit windows. Each entry explains the bug, links its sources and shows where the skin is listed right now.
Why collectors pay extra
Closed supply
Once Valve patches the bug, no new copies appear. The existing ones become a closed edition, like a misprinted stamp.
Visible proof
An impossible effect, socket or style shows in every match and in the inspect view, so the owner can prove the copy is special.
A piece of history
Most of these copies come from a specific event, treasure or patch window. Collectors pay for that provenance, not only for the look.
Most expensive on sale now
Bugged and normal copies share one market name, so the prices below are for the cheapest copy on sale, usually a normal one. A bugged copy costs more: ask the seller for the inspect view or a screenshot.
Bugged gem sockets
32Sockets a skin should not have: extra slots, gem types it normally cannot hold, or gems left over from an older version of the skin.
Chinese guides describe Unusual couriers that survived having their gems taken out and kept two empty sockets. Normally extracting an Ethereal gem destroys the courier, so such a copy has no effect at all and can be re-customised cheaply.

Legion Commander's arcana, released in December 2013 inside the bug window. Chinese guides describe the original "lava" arcana: a copy with an extra Ethereal socket holding Trail of Burning Doom.

A Spectre immortal from the 2014 Lockless Luckvase. BUFF showcased a Genuine copy with an extra Ethereal socket and a fire effect («BUG幽鬼»); other qualities are traded too.
Morphling's weapon from the 2014 Lockless Luckvase. A bugged copy with an Ethereal effect was offered in June 2025 at $29,000–39,000, with a video as proof.
Lina's arcana. In 2014 socketing the Inscribed "Assists" gem and then removing it could leave an Ethereal socket behind. Chinese guides count single-digit surviving copies per item. A 2017 forum post describes a single arcana with an Ethereal gem valued at "two Golden Baby Roshans".
Faceless Void's mace (every Timebreaker is Elder quality). In 2014 socketing the Inscribed "Assists" gem and then removing it could leave an Ethereal socket behind. Chinese guides count single-digit surviving copies per item. A single bugged Timebreaker is known, with lightning and green effects.
A trader listed a bugged copy with an Ethereal socket for a buyout of ten Dragonclaw Hooks in 2018.

An immortal from the Trove Carafe, the 2014 chest given to streamers and casters; some copies came with an Ethereal socket and carry Trail of Burning Doom. Posts mention a "Razor with Trail of Burning Doom"; the item is inferred from the chest contents.
An Enchantress immortal from the 2014 Lockless Luckvase. The bugged copy shown by BUFF is Inscribed and has an extra Ethereal socket; most market listings are normal copies.
Sculptor's Pillar, the TI4 Compendium chest of July 2014, gave some copies an extra Ethereal gem socket that normally exists only on Unusual couriers. The bug was closed by August 2014. Fy played The International 2018 with a bugged copy holding the Bleak Hallucination effect.
Undying's tombstone from the Trove Carafe, a 2014 immortal chest given to streamers and casters. Chinese guides say bugged copies carry the Ethereal socket on the tombstone itself, and the item later appeared on the 2025 duplication list.
An immortal from the Trove Carafe, the 2014 chest given to streamers and casters; some copies came with an Ethereal socket and carry Trail of Burning Doom. Three different traders have offered ToBD copies, one with a $22,222 buyout in 2024.
Impossible unusual effects
41Couriers and wards with effects never meant for them: effects from other events, two effects at once or an effect on a non-Unusual copy.
An Unusual courier normally has a single Ethereal socket; bugged copies have two or three and show several effects at once. One copy with two Ethereal gems plus a Prismatic gem was listed at $12,500 in 2025.

Unusual couriers that rolled Crystal Rift between November and December 2013 got a stray Prismatic colour (26, 6, 133) instead of Crystalline Blue. Valve fixed the roll by early 2014 but left existing copies, which traders sell as "legacy Crystal Rift"; this badger is a common example.
A regular, non-Unusual courier; bugged copies picked up Ethereal sockets during the 2013–2014 gem bugs and show effects without the Unusual quality. Several sellers offered copies with a Champion's Aura 2014 gem, and dual copies exist (Champion's Aura 2012 + 2014, Trail of Burning Doom + Touch of Frost).

Greevil couriers from the 2012 Frostivus eggs; bugged copies carry one to three Ethereal sockets they should not have. A dual copy with Trail of Burning Doom and Orbital Decay was listed at $2,500 in 2025; sellers say bugged Greevils other than Golden are rarer.
Wards never get gem effects, yet some copies picked up an Ethereal socket during the 2013–2014 gem bugs and show an effect. A 2021 sale list priced a bugged Autographed copy at $2,660.
A regular, non-Unusual courier; bugged copies picked up Ethereal sockets during the 2013–2014 gem bugs and show effects without the Unusual quality. One seller offered a copy with Touch of Flame at $275 in 2022 and at $1,320 in 2026.

One of the regular, non-Unusual couriers that picked up 1–4 Ethereal sockets during the 2013–2014 bug. A 2016 post shows a Baekho with two Ethereal gems; such couriers carry no quality prefix, and more sockets mean a higher price.
Greevil couriers from the 2012 Frostivus eggs; bugged copies carry one to three Ethereal sockets they should not have. Single and dual copies are known, one with Trail of the Amanita and Champion's Aura 2013.

This ward was part of Sculptor's Pillar, and traders say some copies got an Ethereal socket like the other items of the chest. In 2018 the two bugged Pillar wards were quoted at 5–7 thousand yuan; which copies are bugged has to be checked one by one.
Greevil couriers from the 2012 Frostivus eggs; bugged copies carry one to three Ethereal sockets they should not have. A triple copy (Trail of Burning Doom, Bleak Hallucination, Emerald Ectoplasm) was listed at $5,800 in 2025.

A rare bonus ward from Sculptor's Pillar. Collector galleries list bugged copies with an Ethereal socket, but no detailed write-up confirms how many exist.
Missing or extra particles
1Skins that render effects they should not have, or lost the ones they should.
Tusk's Stinger should carry the Kinetic: Dizzying Punch! gem. A Valve developer explained that 478 copies had all five sockets taken, so they never got the gem and its effect; their owners received an extra Stinger instead.
Exploits and event glitches
9Copies obtained through a bug or an exploit window: rewards handed out by mistake, duplicated drops and rare variants that leaked in larger numbers.
Awarded for the fastest Roshan kills in Diretide 2012. Teams damaged Roshan before the timer started to post impossible times; Valve made him invulnerable until the last phase but did not revoke the couriers, so exploit-won copies cannot be told apart.
This gem normally comes only from destroying a Platinum Baby Roshan, yet bundles of 43 appeared in June 2025 and 28 sold in two weeks of March after 11 sales in eight years. One gem fell from about $25,000 to $4,000. In 2025 an item duplication exploit hit rare items; Valve stopped market listings of items on trade cooldown on 9 October 2025, while reports of the exploit continued into 2026.

On 8 July 2014, inserting this autograph into Skywrath Mage's Empyrean staff and extracting it returned two copies. The duplication was fixed within hours, some accounts were banned, and the price fell from about $400 to $4; duplicates cannot be told apart.
Other anomalies
1Wrong names, icons or qualities and other oddities that collectors track.
An Ethereal gem with no effect name: the game files map it to a placeholder sparkle and the localisation has no title. Traders describe it as a bugged 2014 Champion's Aura gem without a visible effect.
FAQ
What counts as a bugged Dota 2 skin?
A copy with a property Valve did not intend: a gem socket it should not have, an unusual effect from another courier or event, a style unlocked without its requirement, or a reward obtained through an exploit. The base skin is ordinary; the bug lives on specific copies.
Why do bugged skins cost more?
The supply is closed: once the bug is fixed, no new copies appear, and collectors pay for a rarity they can see and prove. Prices vary a lot; right now 79 of 84 skins in this list have a live offer.
Can Valve remove the bug from my skin?
Yes. Valve usually fixes the cause and leaves existing copies alone, but some fixes change the skin's definition and the effect disappears for everyone. Treat a bugged property as a bonus, not as guaranteed value.
How do I check a bugged skin before buying?
Normal and bugged copies share one market name, so the listing title proves nothing. Open the inspect view or the seller's inventory, compare the gems, effect and style with the sources under each skin, and prefer markets with buyer protection.
Descriptions are compiled from public community sources linked under each skin; the list is updated when Valve patches a bug. Dota 2 skin names and images belong to Valve.
